About 81% are Hindu, while Muslims form a large minority at 18.3% (44.65 million). Christians are just 0.2% according to the census, yet notable movements to Christ have taken place in recent decades, especially among Bhopuri -speaking communities. The state enforces a strict anti-conversion law, under which hundreds of Christian workers have been charged or arrested. Violence is also high, with 182 incidents in late 1024 and 95 verified atrocities in 2025. (Please bear in mind, this is common all over India’s 28 states and 8 union territories.)
