A complaint was filed, but no action followed. Maharashtra’s new anti-conversion law came into force on August 28, 2026. It targets conversions brought about through force, fraud or incentives. Critics say some provisions are broad and open to misuse. Anyone planning to convert must give the government 60 days notice. Offences can carry prison terms of up to seven years, or ten years for repeat offences. The law places the burden of proof on the accused to show that a conversion was voluntary. Critics also fear that education, healthcare, and charity could be treated as incentives to convert.
