The MRU: A Cow Ate Their Holy Book

(From Pray4SouthAsia.com.(pray4southasia.com) – The Mru people live in the border regions between Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India in South Asia. They have an oral story explaining why they do not possess and ancient sacred book. According to the story, God sent them a holy book carried by a cow, but the hungry cow ate it on the journey. The Mru therefore believe that the written message intended for them was lost. About fifty thousand Mru farm the steep hills of Bandarban in southeastern Bangladesh. They traditionally practice animism, call the creator Turai, and recognize spiritual beings associated with hills and rivers. Their religious traditions have no formal priesthood or temples. Their ancestral lands have increasingly come under pressure from settlement, military activity, and developmental projects, forcing some communities farther into the hills. A people whose own story speaks of a lost holy book are still waiting to receive the Word that cannot be taken from them.

*Pray that the Mru will receive the living Word of God in a language and form they can understand.

*Pray for the protection of the Mru families, communities, and ancestral lands.

*Pray that the Mru will encounter the God who created them and come to know Him through Jesus.
