The nation of Laos is the only landlocked nation in South East Asia. It is bordered by Vietnam, China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia. Theravada Buddhism is the predominant religion, practiced by about half of the population, largely among the Lowland Lao . Other religions and belief systems include non-Buddhist local religions, Confucianism, Christianity, Islam, and the Baha’i faith . The country is largely rural and agricultural, with numerous isolated communities preserving distinct traditions and languages .
Religious persecution in Laos exists, particularly targeting religious minorities like Christians and those perceived as affiliated with foreign influences. While the government regulates religious institutions, some local officials in rural areas exert pressure on minority groups to renounce their faith, threatening arrest, eviction, or fines.
