About a month ago, we reported to you that Afghan women, who have suffered so much under Taliban rule, are now having to contend with a new law that closed all midwifery programs. That was the one area in the entire country were women were allowed to be educated and to work. A letter reminding all non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) that they are prohibited from employing Afghan women and risk closure if they do so was mailed to every NGO in the country.
However, one organization, Morningstar Development, who has worked in Afghanistan for many years, inquired of that government if they could keep employing women as “BLISS” trainers….”Birth Life Saving Skills”. This program teaches both men and women principles for healthy pregnancies, safe deliveries, and proper infant care. The government said, “Yes! Your exception still stands.” Bear in mind that Morningstar has to hire “mahrams” (male relatives) so that the women may attend the trainings. That is the only way Afghan women may go out in public.
Praise God that this venue is still available to Morningstar and the women of Afghanistan in this life-saving work! Over 2,200 women have been equipped with these skills, according to Morningstar Development. Through this, Morningstar is able to continue to esteem women! This vital organization needs your financial support and your prayers for all the work they do for Afghans everywhere. For more information on this program, please visit their website, www.msdev.org
