Buddhism in Sri Lanka

(From Pray4SouthAsia, pray4southasia.com) About 70% of the 22 million people of Sri Lanka are Buddhists belonging to the Theravada tradition*. It is in the country’s official religion. According to Sinhalese Tradition, Buddhism came to Sri Lanka from India about 200 years before Christ. Buddhism plays an eminent political role in Sri Lanka and also serves as a unifying force for the Sinhalese ethnic community.

*Pray for Sri Lankan Buddhists to hear the gospel in ways they can understand.

*Pray for their hearts to be softened to receive Christ and His gospel.

*Pray for Christians to be intentional in introducing Jesus to their Buddhist relatives, friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

(* Theravada Buddhism is one of the oldest and most orthodox forms of Buddhism. It emphasizes the preservation of the original teachings of the Buddha, particularly through the Pali Canon, which is the most complete surviving collection of Buddhist scriptures.)
