(From Pray4SouthAsia.com). Pakistan means “land of the pure”–the pure followers of Allah. It was founded in 1947. It now has a population of about 255 million, of which over 96% follow Islam. After Indonesia, it is the second largest Muslim-majority nation in the world. Christians make up about 1.5-2% of the population, most of whom are in the Punjab province. Christians face persecution under blasphemy laws, discrimination, and occasional violence. Even so, there are reports that God is using believers to plant churches. The increased use of digital tools for gospel communication is also beginning to bear fruit.
Almost 45% of Pakistan’s people live in poverty. Unemployment is officially 5-6%, but much higher when underemployment is considered. Christians, just 1.3% of the population, are among the poorest. Many are restricted mainly to sanitation work and face systemic discrimination. Yet churches and ministries are responding….offering education, supporting small businesses and freeing families from bonded labor.
